SKETCH A DAY 87: HEPZIBAH

I hope I spelled her name right, lol. But here is Hepzibah from the X-Men. She used to be a member of the Starjammers and recently got stuck on Earth and has joined the X-Men (X-Force to be exact, I think). Not sure why I decided to draw her other than I thought it'd be fun and sexy cat ladies are always nice to draw, lol.

SKETCH A DAY 86: SCARLET WITCH

This sketch of Scarlet Witch didn't exactly go the way I planned it to. I was trying for something pensive with her, but I don't think it worked. I still like the hair (which was a happy mistake) and the power effect.

SKETCH A DAY 85: AQUAMAN

I'm not sure how I feel about this sketch today. On one hand, I think I drew his shoulders uneven and that I should have cropped his hand differently so that it was extending more out of the box. Then on the other hand, I kind of like this sketch because I tried to make it look like it was raining on him. I think that came out okay. This one turned out to be good practice. It also makes me miss Aquaman. I loved his book when Peter David was writing it. Even with the hook! lol. DC is bringing him back as a Black Lantern soon, so I'm sure he'll be back in action in no time.

SKETCH A DAY 84: SHEHULK

Just a quick sketch for today. Since I've been drawing some of the muscle ladies lately (Power Girl and Big Barda), lol, I figured I might as well round them off and do the last one I can think of, SheHulk. This one was done really fast. It took like no time at all. I feel guilty posting it. But I'm posting it anyway, lol.

SKETCH A DAY 83: POWERBOY

Powerboy was a Titan created during the 1 year later storyline that DC did during 52. They added like a ton of Titans to the team. Most of which were lame and ripoffs. Powerboy even looked like he was that too at first. I figured he was just a male Powergirl. I mean, he does have that hole in his costume at the chest just like her. But Powerboy actually turned out to be a little different. They revealed he was a New God and from Apokolips. I liked that idea and thought it had a lot of potential. Especially since the Titans never had any real dealing with Apokolips. Of course, DC didn't do anything but the expected and they made Powerboy into a Supergirl stalker. Lame. Then they Judd Winick kill him when he relaunched the horrible Titans series that reunited the Wolfman/Perez Titans. Oh, well, lol. He was a different type of character for me to draw. I think the pose is a little off, but I was trying to give him a strong look yet look like he had a "I love myself" attitude.

SKETCH A DAY 82: BIG BARDA

As I've been drawing, I've gotten requests from people and this sketch of Big Barda is one of those. I wasn't wild about drawing her at first. Her costume is crazy! lol. But as I started to sketch her out I got into it. There are way too many elements in this costume and yet, it works! It looks different and cool to me. I really love the helmet too.

SKETCH A DAY 81: ELEKTRA

I admit it. I did this one only because I wanted to try to draw a hot pose. Not sure if I was successful, lol, but I like how it turned out. Not a big fan of Elektra, as I think they should have kept her dead. But it was Miller that killed her and Miller that brought her back, so at least it wasn't a case of someone undoing someone else's work. The Skrull invasion was all her fault though.

SKETCH A DAY 80: ANGEL

I seem to draw way more girls than guys, what can I say, they're more fun. But I try to keep it even so I figured I'd give Angel a try. I'm pretty happy with this one. Mainly because I gave him a slightly different looking face. I wasn't too into drawing the wings though, lol. They're a pain.

SKETCH A DAY 79: PIXIE

Sorry for not posting anything in a few days. It's been a little busy this month, but things are back on track now. I even got some awesome art from Teyo for the OGN we're working on. I hope to post some previews soon. And Jamie and Rey are continuing to do some beautiful work on NEVERMINDS. I'll try to show more of that soon too. In the meanwhile, even though I haven't been posting my "sketch a day" pics everyday, I'm still drawing everyday. To make up for it all, I'm posting a couple pics today, starting with this one of Pixie. Pixie was a member of the New X-Men (an updated New Mutants) from a while back. She was really a secondary character that I admit I laughed at when she first appeared. Somehow though, the girl made it through the massacre of the students in New X-Men (yes, the killed a bunch of students again in that) and made it through the de-powering of Mutants via the Scarlet Witch and then they actually gave her stuff to do. Imagine that, lol. They made her into a kind of cool character and even connected her to Magik and gave her her own soul knife. I was actually starting to like her. She's in big leagues now as one of the X-Men and They've sexed her up and she doesn't look much like she used to. Still, I figured I'd draw her since she's a little different type of character. Had fun with the hair, lol.

SKETCH A DAY 78: FIRESTORM

Back when I got into comics, the Superfriends were still on TV and they had recently added Firestorm to the line-up. I didn't know anything about the character, but thought he was pretty cool. Also, I remember liking that they had a younger character on the team other than Robin and the Wonder Twins, who all seemed nerdy. Firestorm's book back in the 80s was pretty good too, until they made him a fire elemental. And, of course, they had Firehawk in there. Now I have to add her to my list to draw, lol.

ANOTHER NEVERMINDS SNEAK PREVIEW

I had a looooong weekend this past week and wasn't really able to get any blogging done. I also wasn't able to scan any of the new sketches I've done. But I figure I'd make up for it by posting another sneak preview of NEVERMINDS. Of course, lol, it's only one panel again. But look how great it looks. Jamie and Rey are really doing a kickass job on the art and I think the wait is worth it since every panel is just as good as this.

I also want to say congrats to Ryan and Lauren McLelland who tied the knot this weekend. It was a great wedding and I was honored to be invited. Here's to many more years together for you two! Cheers!

SKETCH A DAY 77: NIGHTWING

The book that got me into comics was the New Teen Titans back in the 80s and one of my favorite characters was Nightwing. I really liked all the members of the team, but Nightwing stood out because of his long history and the fact that he was the only member of the team without any powers. I thought he was cool, lol. I kind of felt like I was getting in a rut with my sketches and wanted to try to do a different kind of pose. Something with a little more perspective. So, I decided to draw Nightwing. I'm not sure how well I achieved my goal, lol, but I kind of like how this one turned out.

SENTINELS ON 411 MANIA

Okay, so we all google ourselves once in a while, admit it. Last night I was a little bored and took a break from working on projects and googled SENTINELS and my name. This link came up and I was shocked by it. It's a super cool mention on 411mania.com in a column by Mike Gorman. In it, Mike lists his top ten Graphic Novel adaptations he thinks should be made into films. And WTF, lol, SENTINELS is listed at number 6. Crazy, huh? See, sometimes you find good things about yourself on the web. :)

Here's the list and what he had to say about SENTINELS:

10. JSA: The Golden Age by James Robinson & Paul Smith
9. Superman vs. Muhammad Ali Denny O'Neil & Neal Adams
8. Batman: Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison & Dave McKean
7. Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia by Greg Rucka & J.G. Jones
6. Sentinels: Book 1 by Rick Bernatovech & Luciano Vecchio
5. Get a Life by Philippe Dupuy & Charles Berberian
4. Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore & Brian Bolland
3. CVO: Covert Vampiric Operations by Alex Garner & Mindy Lee, Jeff Mariotte & Gabriel Hernandez
2. Superman Vs. Aliens by Dan Jurgens & Kevin Nowlan
1. Maus: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman

6. Sentinels: Book 1 by Rick Bernatovech & Luciano Vecchio: Not as well known as many of the books I have selected, SENTINELS, tells the story of a group of heroes struggling to carry of the traditions of their parents. They do without direction as their families, the original Sentinels, have disappeared. The story is unique as are the heroes. No prior knowledge or back story is needed for an audience to access a production of this tale.

SKETCH A DAY 76: PLASTIC MAN

I was trying to think of someone different for me to draw. I felt like doing something fun and lighthearted. Of course, the first character that came to my mind was Plastic Man. I really had a blast doing this sketch and I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.

SKETCH A DAY 75: BLINK

Blink is an interesting character to me. She first appeared in X-Men as one of the characters that would later become GenX and she sacrificed herself to save everyone else. Then during the Age Of Apocalypse, she reappeared but was the Blink from that reality. When that storyline ended the AoA universe was destroyed and she died again. But the character proved to be so popular that she was brought back yet again. This time in Exiles written by Judd Winnick. Now, I'm not a fan of Winnick's at all. Believe me, I think he takes the easy road too much and does things just to stir up controversy so he can get attention. It's all hype and rarely makes sense in his stories. BUT, lol, I think that he was kickass on Exiles. I really enjoyed it and thought it was his best work. So, basically, in my eyes, lol, Blink is a character that keeps coming back over and over even though she shouldn't and she was written best by a writer I who's not a fav of mine. I have no idea why I still like her. Anyway, lol, here's Blink as my latest "Sketch A Day".

IGNITE COLORED BY REY ARZENO

Rey Arzeno, Mr. Chilito himself, colored this awesome sketch of Alex (Ignite) from the 3rd Gen SENTINELS that he drew for me at the NYC Comic Con this year. I love the slightly crazy look in his eyes, lol, it fits. Thanks, Rey. This was a great surprise to see! :)

SKETCH A DAY 74: CHAMBERLAIN

A bunch of you suggested for me to draw something from the movie, the Dark Crystal. I always loved that movie and have fond memories of seeing it when I was young. One of my favorite characters was the sneaky Chamberlain. His constant "mmmm" was super creepy and funny at the same time. So, naturally I decided to draw him. I want to do more from this movie since I think there are a lot of great character designs in it, but I only had time to do this quick one for now. Maybe Aughra next time.

SKETCH A DAY 73: POWERGIRL

Since her new ongoing series came out this week, I thought I'd take a crack at drawing Powergirl. I never really liked Powergirl until she started appearing in JSA. Since then they've really developed her. And I'm not talking about what developed naturally on her, lol. With Amanda Conner drawing her new series, it was a no-brainer that I was going to get it. Amanda is one of my favorite artists and I want to support her. Also, I want to support this new series since so many other new books at DC seem to have been cancelled recently (Manhunter, Blue Beetle). I decided to just draw Powergirl in a classic stance and try to make her look tough yet still feminine.

PHOENIX COLORED BY NOEL SHORT

I meant to post this pic the other day but totally forgot to. Sorry about that, Noel. My buddy and writer of Splash's story from the SENTINELS Anthology colored this sketch of Phoenix that I drew when I first started my "sketch a day" project. Noel recently moved to California to concentrate on his own graphic novel, Breakers. He's co-writing it with his friend, Drew, and also hopes to color it. So, he's been practicing/developing his coloring skills. I think he's off to a great start. Thanks for surprising me with this, Noel. I like it a lot!

SKETCH A DAY 72: FREDDIE KRUGER

Throwing in some different type of characters again, this time it's Freddie Kruger. Someone I know wore a shirt recently that looked exactly like this. I couldn't stop laughing. I always loved the original Nightmare movie and Freddie creeped the hell out of me. There is supposed to be a new version in the works. Let's hope it doesn't turn out like the Halloween movie "re-vision", lol.

SKETCH A DAY 71: WOLVERINE

Since I saw his movie last week, I kind felt like drawing Wolverine. I had planned to do the movie version but then as I sketched him, the pose felt better for the comic version. I'm pretty happy with the way he looks. Maybe less arm hair next time, lol.

SKETCH A DAY 70: JADE

I wanted this sketch of Jade to kind of match the one I did for Obsidian, so I tried to do the energy of her powers in a different way. I'm not sure how I feel about this sketch. At first I was liking it, but since some idiot on Facebook just slammed my art because a friend posted one of my drawings on there, I'm not so wild about it now. Anyway, lol, I miss Jade, she was a cool character and Infinity Inc was one of my fav books. I'm sure they'll bring her back soon though. No comic characters stay dead forever, lol.

SKETCH A DAY 69: SUPERBOY

I decided to draw Superboy due to the recent Legion of 3 Worlds series. I'm really enjoying that and it made me realize how much I actually liked this character, lol. Not too sure on my perspective here, but it turned out okay I guess.

SKETCH A DAY 68: MORPHEUS

Here's something a little different for me. I did this quick sketch of Dream (Sandman) and wanted to try using some markers to give it some gray tones. I haven't worked with markers in years. I forgot how intimidating they can be, lol. Anyway, this sketch was done super fast and I kind of like how it turned out. Not my usual style either, but I wanted to make him look a little different too.

SKETCH A DAY 67: THE GOBLIN QUEEN

Didn't finish as many sketches as i planned to this weekend, but it was a busy week. I did finish this sketch of the Goblin Queen from X-Men. At first I really liked the way this sketch was heading. The pencils looked good. But then I started inking it and now I'm not wild about the way I did the demons. Maybe I shouldn't have even done them, lol. At least SHE was fun to do.
