I just got word that the very talented and all around nice guy artist, Charles Holbert Jr, who drew Harlette's story in the SENTINELS Anthology will be doing a signing for the Anthology at the Comic Oasis in Las Vegas. I can't speak highly enough about Charles's art. I really expect him to be a big comic star someday soon and feel lucky to have gotten him involved in the Anthology. If his work in the Anthology isn't enough to convince people of that, just take a look at this print he did for the signing of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.. It's so freaking sweet. I love it. If you in the Las Vegas area, stop by on July 9th, 2008 and say hello to Charles. Stop by http://comicoasis.com/ to find out more details. Of course, I'm not sure the girls in that pic with Charles will be there. But you never know. :) I hope it goes well, Charles!

I had the pleasure of meeting Rey Arzeno a while ago through Deviant Art. I really loved his style, so I dropped him a note and then got to meet him at this years NYC Comic Con. Of course, talking to people online and then meeting them in person are two totally different things. Sometimes you hit it off and become friends, sometimes you don't. Luckily for me, lol, Rey is a super cool guy and has become a good friend. Over the last few months we've talked about working together on something and hopefully we'll start soon. (Gotta lots of work to do first!).

Following up on my last post, I thought I show another idea from the 3rd Gen SENTINELS that didn't come to light. Here is Flake, a character who would have and a BIG impact on all the kids. I don't want to say what her storyline would have been, because who knows, maybe I'll use it somehow or somewhere else one day. But, she would have been part of another group and she had very strong ties to the SENTINELS. She's the granddaughter of Shiver who appeared very briefly in SENTINELS Book 2: Masks. I love Luciano's design for her and think she'd have been a really great character. Cute, huh?
I realized the other day that I have these awesome pages that Luciano did a long time ago of the 3rd Gen SENTINELS that no one has really seen. Back when we were doing the SENTINELS graphic novels (right after the second trade), we toyed around with the idea of doing an on-going series featuring the 3rd Gen team. I had written about three issues of it and Luciano had drawn six pages (which are posted here). We intended to show it to Image Comics and see if they were interested in publishing it. Sadly, when I met with the guy in charge of Image, he wasn't the nicest person. That's all I'll say about that. But regardless, he didn't like our work and we went back to finishing the SENTINELS series. As we got to the end, it became clearer to us that as much as we loved the 3rd Gen, we really didn't have any specific story in mind for them. With SENTINELS we had a great epic tale and a story that, we felt, had a lot of heart and purpose. We eventually decided against doing the 3rd Gen as a series and most of what we had started ended up making it's way into the SENTINELS Anthology.

A while back now, I was shown this awesome site by Keefer Kopco. It's called COMICVINE and is more or less a database for all different kinds of superhero characters. Keefer brought it to my attention because he set up an entire page for SENTINELS! Complete with bios, gallery art and even an entry for Squadron 7. I can't thank Keefer enough for doing this. It's really a huge undertaking and looks great! Check it out at http://www.comicvine.com/sentinels/65-48487/ .
Keefer also did a site full of SENTINELS micros. It's been on our main website for some time. But I thought since I was mentioning COMICVINE, I'd give Keefer more props for the site he had made before. Check out http://www.freewebs.com/the-sentinel-micros/ to see even more micros Keefer has done of the SENTINELS.
Crusher get his turn in my sketch book as done by Bryan K. Turner, aka Flash! I have to admit that this pic is one of my favorite I've gotten. Bryan really has a energetic quality to his style. I love the way he poses his characters in such dynamic positions. And as I look at his rendition of Crusher, I can't help but notice that he kind of made his costume look like a Kirby design. I love that. Check out more of Bryan's work at http://www.bturnerdesigns.com/ and his Deviant page at http://sauceboy.deviantart.com/.
I had the honor of meeting David Petersen, the creator of MOUSE GUARD, at the Wizard World Philly Con. Anyone who has read MOUSE GUARD knows that David is an extremely talented guy, but he also happens to be super nice. He was constantly busy talking with fans and other creators and did quite a few commissions while he was there. I consider myself very lucky to have gotten a sketch by him. Originally I was thinking I'd have him do a teamshot for me, but after chatting with him for a while and thinking about his work. I asked him to just draw Templar and Firebomb in their final costume looks. I think it fit with his MOUSE GUARD series about mice knights. What I didn't expect was the detail David put into this sketch. It's really incredible and SENTINELS fans might also notice that David used the CYPRUS vessel as a background to the sketch. How cool is that?
I actually got these sketches at both the NYC Comic Con and the Wizard World Philly Con. At the NYC Con, my table was next to Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani. They were super nice guys and very funny. Art and Franco are the creators of DC Comic's TINY TITANS. The book is aimed at kids, but there are tons of adults who like it too. Art does the artwork on the book and he was doing quick sketches for only a dollar. Crazy, huh? So, I couldn't pass up getting him to draw the 3rd Gen SENTINELS for me. He did them so fast and I think they're great. Lots of energy in them and in color even (crayons). A few friends also got Franco to do sketches for them and I had no idea he was an artist also. I was kicking myself for not getting something by him at NYC. As luck would have it, Art and Franco were at the Philly Con and I had Franco draw the 3rd Gen SENTINELS this time. He did them as a team in my sketch book and for only a dollar each. Gotta love them!

Taki Soma was the first artist I had do a sketch for me at the Philly Con this past weekend. I'd tried to get a sketch from Taki at Pittsburgh last month, but I kept missing her. Taki has a really bold style and the line work on her sketches is amazing. On top of all that Taki is a super nice person. Really. I mean, how many artist go around giving out cookies at the con? lol. She always has a big smile on her face and is very considerate to all her fans. Check out more of Taki's work at http://www.takisoma.com/ and find out more about her up-coming mini-series with Michael Avon Oeming.

Here is another SENTINELS commission Luciano Vecchio has done. Templar was done for Todd Latoski in part for all his help with the Anthology and also for all the work he did at the Florida Megacon. Todd's gotten quite a collect of SENTINELS commissions over the years and says he plans to eventually get all of the team.
Writer and musician, Philip Clark will be signing copies of the SENTINELS Anthology tomorrow at The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach, California from 5pm to 8pm. Philip is the writer of Firebomb's story in the Anthology. Philip will also have copies of his own series QUANTUM: ROCK OF AGES on hand to sign at the store as well as CDs of his music. THE STATE OF THE BLUE-EYED SOUL, Philip's first CD, has already occupied Top-10 positions on internet urban/R&B charts, and are regularly featured on MP3.com, Riffage.com, and Farmclub. I have a copy and can't recommend it enough. Great stuff!. So, if you're in the area, stop by The Comic Bug and see Philip!
Back from Wizard World Philly! The Con was excellent. I was at the convention with Jamie Fay (artist on NEVERMINDS) and Bryan J.L. Glass (writer of MICE TEMPLAR). Bryan was nice enough to offer to share his table with Jamie and I. We got to hang with him and his wife, Judy, Michael Avon Oeming and Taki Soma, David Petersen, Arune Singh, Sam Vera, James Rodiquez and many other cool people. Thanks again, Bryan. I owe you!I sold well over what I thought I would there. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and said hello and to those who took a chance and purchased SENTINELS. One of the highlights of the show was getting a heoclix statue of Rapture. As you can see in the picture with this post, it's really amazing. Of course, I was so shocked that someone was giving this to me as a gift, that I didn't remember there name when I got home. Sorry about that. I did get his e-mail though and wrote him and hopefully I can give him proper credit when I hear back from him. Thanks again!!!
Of course, I also got a lot of sketches at the convention that I'll be posting over the next few weeks. Jamie was also really busy doing sketches and you can see a commission here he did of Splash for someone. Pretty cool, huh?
I heard back from the cool guy who did the Rapture Hero-Clix for me. It was done by none other then, Chris "Tinge" Schadt. Chris has also done HeroClix of Templar, Firebomb, Splash and Electron. He promises to send pics and when I get them I'll post them on the blog. Thanks again, Chris!
