SENTINELS GEN 3 OLD PAGES

I realized the other day that I have these awesome pages that Luciano did a long time ago of the 3rd Gen SENTINELS that no one has really seen. Back when we were doing the SENTINELS graphic novels (right after the second trade), we toyed around with the idea of doing an on-going series featuring the 3rd Gen team. I had written about three issues of it and Luciano had drawn six pages (which are posted here). We intended to show it to Image Comics and see if they were interested in publishing it. Sadly, when I met with the guy in charge of Image, he wasn't the nicest person. That's all I'll say about that. But regardless, he didn't like our work and we went back to finishing the SENTINELS series. As we got to the end, it became clearer to us that as much as we loved the 3rd Gen, we really didn't have any specific story in mind for them. With SENTINELS we had a great epic tale and a story that, we felt, had a lot of heart and purpose. We eventually decided against doing the 3rd Gen as a series and most of what we had started ended up making it's way into the SENTINELS Anthology.

But still, I thought it'd be nice to show the pages we had done and see how things had changed. Some of the characters got tweaked a little, but for the most part you know who they are. These pages helped us define them so that when they finally saw print, we knew their personalities pretty well. Probably the biggest change was that their was no daughter for Switchfast and Agent Huggins back then. Psyched was created later and I think she rounded out the group well.

I hope everyone enjoys a look at these pages!

Rich your holding out on us!

This has a really different feel than the Anthology. Simon's a bit of a jerk here and some of the designs seem a little different, or it might just be the colors. I really like Wickid here, he could totally get his own short story. I also like Crusher's training clothes. A little throwback o his original costume, eh?

Thanks, guys. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing these pages. I didn't want to show them until after the Anthology came out. I wasn't holding out on you, lol.
And yeah, Keefer, it has a totally different feel then the Anthology because we were working it in a different direction. We had more stories lined up for the characters here cause it was going to be an on-going, so there was more conflict.
Simon was a little bit more of a jerk I guess. But hey, if Alex was your brother, you might be too, lol.
Yeah, the costumes were tweaked a little here and there and the colors adjusted. And Luciano's style was a little different back then too.
For Wickkid, I have lots of ideas. Still do. He would travel a much different road then the other Sentinels kids as he got older. His paintings in the Anthology might give you some clues.
Lol, yeah, Crusher's training clothes were a throwback to his original days. That was Luciano's touch.

I could actually see WicKid pulling off his own story really well completely away from the Sentinels. Something about him turning eighteen and running away. It would probably involve drugs, sex, and crime in the city. It would have a completely different feel from the Sentinels books.

Sex, drugs and crime in the city? Hmmm, sounds more like a story for Jesse. ;)
Wickkid's story would involve his connection to a darker world down below. :)

I was just picturing Wickkid take the same path as his mom. What's this about Jesse?

Yeah, I could see that happening too. Could be interesting.
As for Jesse, nothing yet, I was just saying that what I do have in mind for him is more along the line of what you said. I'm only starting to work on stuff for him. But I can totally see him trying to find his way in the real world after years of training with Lightbringer and Prophet and experiencing the big city for the first time. He might be a bit of a fish out of water.

it was cool to see these again, rich!!! i like to see how luc's art has grown since he drew these.

So Prophet will be with them? Sweet in my mind it was those three plus Rancid, just cause I like him and he ties into the religion theme.

Thanks, Jamie. I agree, Luciano's art grew throughout the series and it was really cool to see his development.
And yeah, Keefer, Prophet is with them. But it'll mainly be about Jesse. Rancid on the other hand is with the Sentinels. Since he's a teacher as well as a preist, I thought it made more sense to have him there. Prophet and Lightbringer have more in common and a stronger history to me. Having them take Jesse under their wing made sense. I don't see any reason for Rancid (Father D.) to be with them other then his ties to religion. And I just didn't think that was enough.

Wait! Stitchy's gone. I didn't even notice. You guys weren't gonna use her!?

Rich B. said...

lol, yup. Stitchy (Psyched) was added later. These pages were done around the time we were starting to work on Sentinels Book 3: Echoes. You can tell by Luciano's style.
Once we decided against doing a monthly (and since Image wasn't interested, lol), we decided to add Anne. If we'd done the series adding Flake would have filled something that I thought was missing. Since we didn't use her, I decided that we'd add Anne. She was planned for the series too, but she didn't live with the rest of the Sentinels kids. She lived in Washington with her mom and dad since her mom was a Senator now. So, Psyched (Stitchy) was planned, but just not as one of the time.
